Rotating tires changes their wheel positions to manage wear where the vehicle and tire makers permit it. The procedure can require lifting multiple corners, supporting substantial mass, following a specific pattern, handling heavy wheels, inspecting mounting surfaces, and tightening in stages. Decide from equipment and competence, not from the charming simplicity of four circles in a diagram.
Confirm rotation is allowed
Read the exact owner's manual and tire instructions. Directional tires, staggered sizes, different front and rear wheels, full-size spares, dual wheels, tire-pressure sensors, and wheel position programming can alter or prohibit common patterns.
If tires already show severe uneven wear, damage, vibration, pulling, or pressure loss, rotation is not diagnosis. Obtain qualified tire, alignment, or suspension inspection.
Evaluate the workspace and support plan

Inspect before moving positions
Record tread depth across each tire, cold pressure, damage, date information, and original position. Inspect wheel and tire condition without touching hot brakes or breathing dust. Mark positions on a diagram.
Clean mounting surfaces only by the exact procedure. Corrosion, cracked wheels, damaged studs, swollen nuts, or mismatched hardware need professional assessment.
Understand wheel-fastener work
Use the exact fastener, seat type, sequence, thread condition, and torque specification. Do not lubricate threads unless directed. Start every nut or bolt by hand and ensure the wheel seats correctly.
Tighten in the specified pattern and stages with a suitable torque wrench. An impact wrench can remove suitable fasteners, but it should not replace final measured tightening.
Account for tire-pressure monitoring
Some systems identify wheel positions and may require relearn or programming after rotation. Others do not. Follow official service information. A warning that appears afterward must be investigated, not muted.
Verify after lowering
Clear tools, lower safely, complete final torque only at the documented stage, set cold pressures, and follow any specified recheck interval. Test at low speed in a safe area for noise, vibration, pull, and warning lights. Stop if anything is abnormal.
The no-DIY guide wins when support, hardware, sensors, corrosion, or physical handling is uncertain. Professional rotation can also provide a lift-based inspection and balancing or alignment evidence. Keep the complete final invoice and position record with the vehicle history.
