Send work to a qualified professional when an error can compromise brakes, steering, tires, wheel attachment, restraints, structure, fuel containment, high voltage, refrigerant handling, visibility, or another system essential to safe control—and you lack every required procedure, tool, measurement, training, and verification step. Confidence cannot substitute for a brake-pressure test or a correctly supported vehicle.
Stop at lifting uncertainty
Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. If approved lift and support points, equipment capacity, firm level ground, wheel restraint, balance, or stability is uncertain, do not raise it. Review jack-stand safety.
Heavy components can shift balance after the vehicle is supported. Transmission, battery, axle, suspension, or fuel-tank removal requires an engineered support plan.
Leave high voltage alone
Hybrid and electric systems can retain lethal energy even when the vehicle appears off. Orange cables, traction batteries, inverters, electric air conditioning, and labeled components require training, personal protective equipment, isolation, testing, and service information.

Never open a hot coolant cap, vent refrigerant, heat a sealed component, or improvise a spring compressor.

Airbags, pretensioners, crash sensors, steering columns, seat occupancy systems, welded structure, glass bonding, and advanced driver-assistance sensors affect crash performance. Repair can require one-time parts, measurement benches, corrosion protection, calibration, and documented scan procedures.
A dashboard light going out does not certify occupant protection.
Stop when diagnosis is absent
A trouble code, noise, or online photo does not prove one failed part. If the procedure depends on bidirectional control, waveform analysis, pressure, smoke testing, compression, leak-down, alignment, programming, or calibrated measurement you cannot perform, obtain diagnosis first.

Ask about relevant training, equipment, service information, written diagnosis, parts, warranty, calibration, and verification. Professional does not mean unquestionable; it means the shop can show how risk is controlled.
DIY is valuable when the task is understood, low-risk, correctly equipped, and verifiable. Choosing not to DIY is equally skilled. The smartest tool in a garage remains the sentence, “This step belongs somewhere with a lift and a person who does it every week.”
