Jack Stand Safety: Plan Before Lifting

Jack-stand safety is a system, not a placement trick
A jack raises a vehicle; approved support equipment holds it. Never place any part of your body beneath a vehicle supported only by a jack. Safe support depends on the exact vehicle lifting and support points, equipment ratings and instructions, firm level ground, wheel restraint, load distribution, and a qualified user's ability to verify stability. If any element is uncertain, do not lift.
Read both sets of instructions
Use official service information for the vehicle and manuals for the jack and stands. Confirm vehicle weight and distribution, lift points, support points, parking-brake or transmission direction, wheel-chock placement, and any restrictions for air suspension or electrified systems.
Match stand type, pair, height, saddle, locking design, and rated capacity to the load and job. Never exceed markings or combine ratings as if four stands automatically multiply every safe condition.
Inspect equipment before use
Check stands, jack, chocks, pins, pawls, welds, saddles, wheels, handles, labels, and bases for damage, deformation, corrosion, contamination, missing parts, or recall status. Remove suspect equipment from use. Do not repair or modify support gear unless the manufacturer provides an authorized process.
Wood blocks, bricks, and improvised towers are not substitutes for correctly selected support equipment. Masonry in particular can fail suddenly and completely under a concentrated load, with no warning and no time to move.
Prepare a firm, level surface
Use a hard surface capable of sustaining the concentrated load without sinking, sliding, or crumbling. Asphalt, soil, gravel, slopes, and damaged concrete can be unsuitable. Follow equipment guidance for any approved load-spreading support.
Keep the area clear and prevent vehicle movement with the documented transmission, parking brake, and chock procedure. Never work where traffic or other people can contact the vehicle.
Lift only at specified points
Position the jack at the exact lifting point and raise smoothly while observing for shifting or damage. Place stands at the specified support locations as a matched setup. Do not support movable suspension parts unless service information explicitly requires it.
Lower the vehicle onto the stands gradually. Keep clear of pinch zones. The jack should not remain the sole support; any secondary backup must follow documented safe practice and must not interfere with the stands.
Verify without entering the danger zone
Confirm every saddle is fully seated, locks are engaged, bases are flat, load is centered, and the vehicle is stable through the equipment maker's permitted verification. Do not perform an improvised “shake test” from beneath or use force that can dislodge the setup.
New York State's FACE Facts sheet on vehicle repair deaths lists what matters most. Chock the wheels. Set the parking brake and put the transmission in park. Make sure the ground is sturdy enough to hold the weight. Support the vehicle on jack stands, never on a jack alone, before anyone goes underneath. Do not place stands under parts that are not fixed in place. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for lifting and securing, and use equipment rated for the work. Using stands of the same type and rating is our own recommendation on top of that, because mismatched stands make it harder to judge whether the load is sitting evenly.
Reassess as work changes
Removing wheels, drivetrain components, batteries, cargo, or other mass changes balance. A forceful fastener can rock the vehicle. If the job changes load or requires high force, reassess support before proceeding. The tire-rotation decision applies this to wheel work.
Lower with the same discipline
Clear tools and people, reinstall required components, raise only as instructed to remove stands, then lower gradually. Remove chocks only when the vehicle is fully supported on the ground and the procedure permits.
DIY preparation and the no-DIY line matter more than saving a shop fee. A vehicle that comes down cannot be stopped or escaped. When the surface, support points, equipment, or method is not unquestionably correct, keep everyone out and call a qualified professional.
